Gusher Zine

I'd like to present a very small blip of Vol. 2 of the collaborative zine Gusher:

Delusions, Illusions, & Beer
Skunk drew the cover

A drawing I did for an interview with Jeremy the magnificent.

Inside cover. I drew booby snake based on a dream I had.

Guy I drew based on Justin Bua's work.
This issue, since it's packed with love, care & awesomeness (& a little more content than the first issue) is $5. We've been know to be open to trade, though! Contact me for more info.
These babies are also available at Share Exchange in Santa Rosa & Gravenstone's in Cotati.

Copies of the first issue are still available for $3 (or trade), or Share Exchange in Santa Rosa.
Here's a look back:
Music, Art, & Divebars
I drew the cover & back

EVERY single issue is individually signed, stamped & numbered!

Repping Another Blog / The Jar Project

I find myself walking a fine line when blogging for my friend's business. In wanting to offer personal notes from various experiences, I later realize it's probably not totally appropriate, as it IS my friend's business, after all. I have saved snippets of the aforementioned writing, however, with the intent of compiling something over here. It will make it, one day.
For now, I will continue to essentially take what I've written for Herban Ecology & post it here. I promise a write-up on our zine Gusher soon, too! I've been overwhelmed lately. It seems when opportunity knocks, it's not so much a quiet tapping, as it is a rampaging bulldozer. But I'm not complaining ;)

-------------------------------------------------------

ATTN: Penngrove, Cotati, Rohnert Park LOCALS

If you haven't heard of the Jar Project yet, be prepared to get excited.
1.) It's free for you to participate. The Redwood Cafe in Cotati is looking for local businesses, community members, and community organizations to pick up their one-quart, wide-mouthed jar & decorate the craft out of it! I'm trying to be punny, but really, get creative. (pssst... You'll save 10% on your order at Redwood Cafe when you submit your decorated jar).

2.) This grass-roots adventure has already been experimented with, & it was successful. Taking notes from Aqus Cafe in Petaluma, we're going all out with trying to corral anyone who is interested. Local news website, the Press Democrat offered this write-up, too! Get your jars in by February 24th.

3.) The funnest part yet: the art reception will be on March 10th, 5-7pm. There will be 50% off beer, wine and appetizers. I don't know about you, readers, but I think the only thing funner than garnishing a self-portrait of sorts in a mason jar is seeing what everyone else did! The event is sure to be great fun even for those who don't think the art proposal is for them- the personalities playfully represented will be entertaining!
These are the jars from the exhibition in Petaluma

;) Thank you Redwood Cafe!

Latest Share Exchange Art Show

So, I'm probably going to cheat & copy what I wrote for Herban Ecology over to here. Sorry! But it's Sunday. You know how Sundays are.

Friday, February 3rd was a very fun evening for us. The people who came out enjoyed themselves by getting to look at all the cool art, snack on hor d'oeuvres, visit with a snake, leaf through the second issue of the zine Gusher, listen to music, taste wine & infused liquors, watch magic tricks by Ray the magician, & play a few rounds of jellybean poker! As you can read, it was an eventful evening, but not to worry if you missed it, you can still stop by Share Exchange to view the art with your own eyes.
SE is located at 531 5th St., Santa Rosa & the hours of operation are:
Monday through Friday 9 to 6pm
Saturday - 11 to 5pm
closed on Sundays.

Josh's recycled wine bottles & spray cans

I love my own kitschy, odd, found-objects mixed media pieces.

Ray does magic tricks

An attendees bicycle

Turns out Ray the magician was quite an artist himself!

As I mentioned the zine up there, Gusher vol. 1 & 2 are available for sale at the Share Exchange marketplace. Later this week I want to dedicate an entry to zines & expand a little more on the topic and why the folks who started Gusher are doing what they are doing. So stay tuned!
Take care & until next time,
Hayley

Come out to our Art Show Tomorrow Night!

I blog twice a week for my friend's business, Herban Ecology & you can read the latest here. I ramble on, you know, kind of like over here & try to keep things related to art & living in a local economy- which is a rather broad subject.

But, not to leave my own little blog in the cold, I wanted to remind readers about the art show tomorrow :)
My little section of mixed media pieces. I wanted them to be silly & somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

I love kitsch, obviously.
HOWEVER, the most notable art for this show belongs to Josh Conley.

I am drawn to art that feels energetic & that I get a spirited buzz from checking out- and I see that in Josh's pieces. I think one would be crazy to miss the month-long gallery show at Share Exchange.

And, last, but not least... dun, dun dunnn... the second issue of the collaborative zine, Gusher will be out! I have not even laid eyes on the finished product myself, so there will be excitement all around. I have only glimpsed the work-in-progress cover:

I so look forward to tomorrow night & hope to see people there :) If any readers get the chance, come up & say hello! Silly hats are encouraged & there will be a riveting game of jellybean poker happening. Free, all ages, wine, music, snacks.

Upcoming Art Reception

Hello all,
I would like to cordially invite readers in the area to another art show I'll be apart of. I don't know who I keep fooling to let me hang my weird stuff up, but don't let them know, okay?
Josh Conley is the headliner, appropriately, as many people love his custom stencils & spray paint aesthetic on recycled & reclaimed materials.
I'm moving away from my framed prints that I've shown twice now & will be adventurously, though nervously hanging my mixed media collages & assemblages. They are another medium I love to dabble in, other than ink doodling. I can try to promise that I will post some pictures, soon? Maybe?

Another exciting update for me, folks, is that I am working with a Sonoma County business woman visionary, whom I wholeheartedly admire! Okay, well I don't want to bring so much cheese to the table, so I'll just say it's an honorary thing that I get to blog for her new start-up, Herban Ecology.
My first timid entry is here. I'm going to be blogging about local art, culture & health related topics & am asking for contributions from readers if they come across something that will be along those topics :) My biggest goal for the HE blog is that I don't want to sound like I have my head up my ass. I'm definitely not an expert in ANY area and I write about things as I learn about them, so suggestions & comments from readers are always welcome.

I will be updating as things come along, so keep in touch!

Art Reception

Last night was very fun, despite my contrary sinuses. Cold medicines seem to only last about three hours, which is enough time to believe your illness isn't as bad as it actually is & once the symptoms return, they hit you like a runny-nosed truck.

I'd like to thank all those who came out & made it a lovely evening. If you couldn't make it last night, the gallery is open every day & our art will be there for the month of January (so stop by!). Also I lowered prices on a fresh batch of my postcards, stickers & crafted tacks at the Share Exchange~ SO get 'em while they last :)  I also added prints & happen to have a few zines left. Look for my display case (image seen belowww).

Pictures hung before the show

Work by Brian Francis, who also played music for the crowd that evening. He makes his own frames!

Sara Davis piece we bought. Her art is colorful & fun :) And she makes the cutest monster plushies!

Master of all trades, Brian Francis delighting the crowd with his music.

Confections, conversations, art, snakes, wine, infused liquors, music.

Have snakes, will travel. He pulled this guy & another out of his backpack!

Check it out! Vendor #153 ~ stickers, magnets, push-pins/tacks, postcards, & (not shown) prints & zines

:)
---------------------------------------------
Yesterday afternoon, my mom (who came to visit me for my art show, how sweet) & I stopped by Renga Arts (their Facebook) & snapped some photos. I honestly already love every one of their sculptures, but it just makes it so much more striking that their pieces are made from recycled & reclaimed materials.

That side mirror on the door makes the whole piece.

......
Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend!

B is for Basil, Assaulted by Bears

I've started an unpleasant habit of becoming physically sick from stress before public events where I show my things (prints, pictures, even my crafts). I understand how illogical and unnecessary this level of mental pressure is, but still I seem to come down with a cold a few days before exhibiting. So accordingly, for tomorrow night, I'll probably be Dayquillin' like a villain. And eating cupcakes.
And while I prefer my cortisol-coma to rushing around in a lethargic state, I figure I have to make some silly magnets & such. Oiy.

While I am procrastinating, I thought I'd post the last two flyers I made for friends:

This gig hasn't happened yet!

Hope everyone who reads this enjoyed their holidays & if you live in the area, hope to see you tomorrow night :)

Last update for this year

Well the holidays have once again snuck up on me! I don't know about you, but I spend a lot of the year looking forward to these last two months, until they actually get here. Feeling very unprepared and scrambling to finish drawing projects, I am also left perplexed by what to give as gifts. Everything has worked out so far, though some of my efforts feel very half-assed. Isn't that what compounds the holiday stress, though? Trying to live up to unrealistic expectations set for ourselves?

Anyhow, I am gearing up for the art show I'll be co-exhibiting on January 6th (info seen here). I will have 11x14 prints for sale... $20 for one, $35 for two, & $50 for three ($20 for each additional print). If you would like larger sizes, I will get that order in for you & have it available within two weeks. Also for sale, I will have my magnets, tacks, stickers, & the 2nd issue of the collaborative local zine, Gusher will be ready!

Cover in progress, by Skunk

Some of the artwork I did for the title pages of articles :) I even wrote a tiny blurb about seeing Weird Al when I was 14 at a nearby county fair. Also, various local artists have contributed their art and writing. So. You know. It should be a good issue.

You know where one of my favorite places is in Santa Rosa? Because it is rather innovative for the downtown area here, I am in love with Share Exchange. Please check it out if you are in the area. In the article I just linked to, it explains,
"... a cooperative on Fifth Street called Share Exchange. In the front, a consignment shop carries art, jewelry, crafts and other items made by Sonoma County people. Nearly 200 have their wares on display there...
Behind the retail shop at Share Exchange is a brightly painted and high-roofed "co-working" space, Sonoma County's first. Independent entrepreneurs and small nonprofits that may be unable to afford their own offices pay to use the work spaces, communal conference room and shared business technology located there.
Among its 40 current tenants are a game programmer, videographer, the North Bay Organizing Project and a solar company."

I absolutely adore all the products they sell. There is something for everyone, and they seem to be doing good business. I have some things in there as vendor #153.

I hope everyone has enjoyable holidays. I must get back to drawing projects :)

Art Show

Pls don't make fun of my lack of photoshop skillz. I just like to draw everything out! So Brian Francis will be showing art as well as delighting the crowd with his music. Wine, snacks, treats, confections, music, art, all ages & FREE~ what more could one ask for?
